My girlfriend is the treasurer for a university club. She was told by the club's president that she was going to be receiving a check for $250 to buy some specific supplies for the club. She was told she was to cash the check and bring the president the money in hand. She didn't think anything was weird about this at first.
A little while later she got an email from the scholarship department of the clubs national headquarters, saying "Congratulations [GF's name], you have won a scholarship for academic excellence." The scholarship is handed out to one active member in each chapter annually for academic achievement. The chapter's recipient member is chosen by the clubs officer/officers. GF says to the pres "I still haven't got the check for the supplies, but I got a scholarship!". Pres replied "No that's for the supplies. When it arrives, cash it and give it to me." Check arrives and it has GF's name on it, and is for the scholarship.
At this point my GF is getting a little suspicious and asks her mom what to do. Her mom agrees it looks fishy and decides to deposit the check into GF's account, then write a check for Pres, so they at least have a record they gave Pres the money. My GF has not given Pres the new check yet. She is going to call the organization tomorrow for more information on the scholarship.
Also, the supplies the check is supposed to be for shouldn't cost anywhere near $250. GF also noted that she will have to pay taxes on this money because she's depositing it into her personal account.
What should she do? Is this as sketchy as I believe it is?
