Hope the title is clear.

I work for a smaller company in Philadelphia, Pa (30 employees) as a field tech with a lot of travel but down time in-between jobs. There are two of us in this role which sometimes seems excessive with downtime, but is definitely necessary when we get busy.

My salaried position was at 34,944. Unfortunately to a lack of numbers in the department they want to downsize the technical team, by changing me to part time.

Today at the end of the work day, I was explained that I would be moved to a part-time position with no guaranteed hours and would fill in a time sheet weekly for the time I do work. I would be paid at a rate at $17 hourly (a whopping .20 more to my current rate as they explained ) This did not seem negotiable the way the explained it.

I will be losing my benefits as they don't expect me to work more than an average of 25 hours over 6 months.

I was told I would need to fill out a time sheet "whether I worked zero hours or more".

They said the changes take place today (essentially retroactively from when they told me?)

They sent me written letter explaining the change that they wanted me to print and sign at the end of the day. I haven't done that.

I'm unsure about unemployment, I am going to the unemployment info center tomorrow. It looks as I may qualify for unemployment if I quit but if I worked a day as a part time employee I wouldn't qualify. (If this is true, the document they've sent seems very sketchy) . I may be speculating too much here.

I Need next steps. I told my boss I would reach out tomorrow .

Currently my rent is relatively high at 750, (I live alone) and I imagine I could find a replacement job, if not several part time jobs.

Is it worth still working at that rate compared to applying for unemployment. / I've heard it's difficult finding a job once you lose one.

I have some savings, but not ideal for just quitting.

Any advice in navigating would be greatly appreciated.
