I bought my fiance a ring made out of moissanite. Basically a silicon based diamond made in a lab meant to mimic a carbon diamond. they're often 10% - 30% the cost of a "real" diamond. They're actually so similar that experts can't tell them apart frequently.

Other than a chemical structure of mostly silicon vs. carbon, the main differences are refractive indexes and hardness. Moissanite's RI is more than twice as high, meaning it sparkles more and is more pretty. Diamond is a 10 on the moh's hardness scale and moissanitte is 9.25.

Long story short, I bought a huge stone for $800 dollars that would have cost 10,000 if it was a carbon diamond and all her friends are jelly.
