It really bothers me when stores have "Free shipping after you spend $X." What triggered the following rant was seeing a recent post regarding a Brooks Brothers sale and with a spend $250 to get free shipping deal. This is not a discussion entirely aimed at BB, but online merchants in general. I know that Shoprunner exists, but that only covers some retailers and not all retailers include all of their items for free shipping. So here goes:

First off, this is especially an issue for clothing items because paying for shipping usually means that you won't get that money back if you didn't like what you purchased. But I get it, shipping costs money and if you're a brand new retailer you have little room for error with your profit/budget. For all others, add the shipping cost into the item and make everything free shipping. Jomers does this and they seem to be doing pretty well.

Second, I know in some other countries you are told of your final price when tax is added prior to checking out. Like taxes (in the US), with shipping you have to wait until you get to your check out cart (usually the very last point just before clicking submit with your card info) is going to be more than you thought you were going to pay originally. If you don't want to implement the shipping in your costs, then do what Uniqlo does and just have the flat shipping cost clearly displayed on every page of your website.

And last, I feel like whoever came up with the "Free Shipping When You Spend $250" line at BB probably brought it up as a joke and someone ran with it. How are you selling premium-quality clothing at premium prices how have you not waived/rolled-in your shipping costs into your items?

Tl;dr: Just roll in your shipping costs into your items (like Jomers) or clearly display a simple flat-rate shipping cost on your website (like Uniqlo)

What's everyone's thoughts on this?
