In pursuit of ever lowering my monthly bills, a friend allowed me to join their Project Fi account on a data-only SIM (google gives out the data SIMs for free). I bought a used phone off CL to put the SIM in. Essentially I only pay for the data I use at $10 per Gig. Since I'm nearly always in wifi areas, I've used about $2.50 this month.

So now, I've turned my old T-mobile phone I into a pay-as-you-go (no data) prepaid. $3 minimum per month, and this is essentially my home phone (which I hardly ever use -- just like doctors reminding me of appointments). The $3 gets 30 minutes talk or 30 texts, or a mix of the two. I can also add a data pass if I'm going to be traveling and need data on this phone for some reason.

Obviously this is only cost-effective for low usage -- and I had to go through the hassle of updating some of my contacts to use the google number as a new text number. I'll be saving about $30 per month for essentially the hassle of carrying a spare emergency phone in my car.
