When my brother turned 18, he got himself a used '97 Toyota. This was back in 2010. He bought it for $2,000 and it needed no repairs. He drove it everywhere you could think of. By the time I got my license, it became my car. Engine still ran great, especially with maintenance keeping the car up to par. From the duration of 2010-2017, we maybe maximum put $800 in maintenance/repairs/tires. A few months ago I got a new car, and today we were finally able to let go of this Toyota that we've held dear to us for 7 years. It has endured strenuous road trips, many miles added on traveling to and from work, school. We let it go for $500.
So a breakdown of expenses, we spent $2300 on the car for 7 years. $328.57 a year. $27.38 a month. Gas is a given, you will spend money on it regardless. But you can be wise with how you spend money on a vehicle for transportation.
$27.38 a month versus what could have been a $300+ a month for financing.
