I'll do bullet points.

  • I share the same name and prior address as my father.
  • medical debt went into collections
  • hit my report

I am not interested in challenging this debt, because it is a legitimate debt for a different person. Clearly there was a mixup somewhere.

I can follow all the steps for x Y and Z around here, but because it is a legitimate debt where the lines got crossed somewhere, I'd like to get advice for this one. Do I call the hospital and have them sort it out?

Now this is not the first time this has happened. About a year ago I got a letter regarding debt for my father as well. But that time I had actually gone to that hospital, this time I've never been a patient at this hospital. Is there a hippa violation or even a risk of hippa violation I can threaten action against? I don't want this to be a recurring problem.

Is there any way to fix this from happening in the future? Other than names, I'm not sure how they're getting my information for billing.
