Hi pf,
Not sure if this is the right place to ask for help with this.
I'm renting a house with a few people and our collective lease is up on March 31st. I'm moving out to live with my SO. The other roommates are in graduate school, and didn't want to move out mid semester, so they asked the landlord to do a month to month until at least the summer. They said that if they find another roommate to replace me, they'll renew for an additional year.
I emailed the landlord about a move-out inspection for my room, and a date to turn in my keys. He responded with:
"I have done move out home walkthru inspection after the lease is expired and all have moved out. I understand you will be moving out end of the month even though the lease is extended for two more months. Also please note any damage in the house is the collective responsibility of all members to the Lease agreement. I can take the keys and do a move out inspection just for you end of the month. I will have to do another move out inspection when all of you have moved out after the lease expires."
How do I handle this? And if they choose to renew for a year, can he still hold me responsible for anything that happens? I'd really like my security deposit back, especially since two people who moved in during a few months into the lease paid a fraction of what the rest of us did.
