i was doing a lot of research online, and most of the advice you find on there is what to do when you get into the dealership. instead, i found that the best way to buy a car is by doing all of your work at home.

  1. find the cheapest price for your car in the US: so i knew i wanted to buy a (specific) car. there are many (specific car) dealerships in my area, so i first went online and found the cheapest 2017 one in the nation. because car prices change by state, what you might buy in alabama might be cheaper than buying in new york.

  2. call the dealerships in your area and tell them that you'll buy from whoever will get closest to your target price: so i called each dealership, told them i could buy the car for X price in this state, but it would be easier for me to buy closer to home. i told each dealership that i'm calling around, and whoever can match closest to price X will get my business

  3. once you get a dealership close to your asking price, pick the one that has the best reviews/closest to you/color that you want, and ask for add-ons for free: so eventually i got it down to 2 or 3 dealerships that all came down to my asking price. i picked the dealership that was closest to where i lived, and told them that other dealerships were naming the same price, but because i liked their dealership the best, what could i get to sweeten the deal? i ended up getting all-terrain floor mats, free car washes/oil changes, and an extra set of keys.

  4. go to the dealership and buy: now that i had a great price with some great stuff thrown in, i went to the dealership for a test drive, liked what i saw, and then purchased the car.

i was really happy with the purchase. from what i could see online, i got it cheaper than anyone else has bought the same car by at least $500.
