I just wanted to say "Thanks" for all of the past advice here on PF to negotiate a job offer. I was trying to get back in the full-time job market after taking several years off to be a SAHP. I knew I was going to face some struggles to find an employer willing to take a chance on hiring me AND that would be a good for me, but lucked into a company that had had difficulties finding someone local with my skills. Knowing they had been searching to fill the position for months helped give me the leverage I needed to politely negotiate a better offer. I was able to get 7% more salary and an additional week of vacation (which was important to me) over the initial offer.

My tips for others: I was polite during all of the back and forth; explained what I needed and (vaguely) why; and when we seemed at an impasse over the issue of vacation, I offered a few options that would be acceptable to me; oh, and I gave myself a day to consider each major change in the offer.

Good luck to others going through job searches!
