I'd like to get some thoughts on this topic from the group? Since I'm not allowed to ask advice I'll give a hypothetical situation instead. If you were a novice investor & maybe only looked at your statements & portfolio once a year. Would you invest the majority of your retirement portfolio in one of those managed retirement funds you often see in your company 401K choices? You know like the target retirement date funds or would you focus the majority of your retirement funds in an Index fund like Fidelity Equity Index, etc. or neither?

Lets say the Retirement Date Fund has an expense ration of 0.45% and the Index has 0.04%. Would those costs alone be the determining factor?
