I've been buying the Pigma Micron pens by Sakura for several years.
They're incredible pens that I use daily pretty much exclusively, whether sketching, note-taking, labeling things, whatever. The lines are smooth, crisp, unbroken, permanent (archival quality), and the ink dries instantly. They come in various colors and many point sizes. Personally I prefer the 08 black.
So far I've been content buying them for $3 at the local art store. Even with daily use one lasts months... but eventually dries up and a hunk of plastic is thrown away. With the most recent purchase, the store owner mentioned investing in a refillable marker pen set called Rapidograph. Apparently they were popular a few decades ago.
The upfront cost for a good set is $100–200, but the unit price of ink is very low. They have two models, Rapidograph and Isograph, with I think the main difference being ink cartridges vs ink reservoir. I believe some cleaning / maintenance supplies are required as well.
Budget is somewhat variable. I'm willing to spend a few hundred dollars or more for a full set that's truly BIFL.
I'm curious to hear if anyone has invested in a Rapidograph or Isograph set (or anything similar) and how it's played out.
