My wife and I work with ~10 teenage kids in a residential treatment home. The kids often stay for around a year, sometimes more or even double that. Occasionally we get very short stays with kids.
We are looking for lots of things that can keep up with that demand (other suggestions would be awesome) but today it is mostly dishes and cookware.
Current Dishes: Correll plates, bowels, etc. Plus a cupboard FULL of random cups.
Wanted Dishes: Something that can hold up to the abuse of kids dealing with a range of struggles. Brittle dishes don't do well due to their possibility of shattering and harming. Melamine isn't microwavable and that really sucks. We were thinking maybe stoneware but font have much experience with it. Versatility is key. We have occasional need for fancy dishes but we can go with just about anything for that, I'm concerned about the every day use dishes.
Current Cookware: Garbage. Random mix of pots and pans ranging from Walmart brand fall apart junk to what used to be very nice stainless steel stuff that was abused before us and is now bowed and difficult to cook with.
Wanted Cookware: Stuff forged by the gods to withstand the test of time! I love the idea of cast iron but know there will be issues with the regular stuff as kids will try and scrub them with soap and ruin them. I've done some looking into the cast iron ceramic Cookware and love the idea, if it works. They aren't good with Teflon coated stuff and use the metal utensils on it and then it's no good. The stainless stands up to the tough factor, but everything sticks to it and the bowed bottoms from throwing hot pans into water (again, before me) are a huge pain.
Budget: we are willing to consider just about anything if it is the last time we buy it. I understand some things these days are just needed to be replaced constantly, but dishes and cookware are exhausting to keep buying.
I hope that is everything... Please message if I forgot some details. I'm working on training them to treat the stuff better, but on my days off it's like monkeys used our stuff to start a garage band.
Thanks guys! Always a fan of BIFL stuff! :)
