This is my first real post on Reddit so my apologies for possibly posting this in the wrong thread and not being very clear. I'm just desperate for any advice because I don't know what to do.
So my friend is in nursing school and her parents are immigrants from Thailand. Her mother speaks barely any English and does not work. Her father speaks some English and has a job; however, he has a list of medical issues--heart attack that lead to heart failure and pneumonia, chronic kidney disease and only 1 kidney, and type 2 DM. They recently found out that her father is insulin dependent for his diabetes and they barely have enough money to afford that. Her father only makes 25K, but it's not low enough to be considered a low income family to get assistance from the government. Her father hasn't been working for the last 5-6 months due to his medical issues, and she just told me that he doesn't think he can go back to work. The company then said he can't get any health insurance anymore and it would cost them $750 a week to continue to have health insurance. With no one working in the family besides my friend as a desk receptionist making $10 an hour, that's no where near enough. However, he is applying to Medicaid within the next week. To add to all of this, my friend goes to an expensive university where she's paying at least 40K, it would have been 55K without her scholarship. She takes out all of her loans, including the parent plus loan. Her parents don't understand anything with finance, so they can't assist her in any way. She's only 21 and has no one to help her.
They've gone through their social security and I'm assuming their 401K to pay for all of the medical issues between her mom (had cancer a few years back), dad and herself. She's been struggling for quite awhile, but this is the worst it's been. I'm just extremely frustrated that people have to live like this and I want to find a way to help her. If anyone has any advice, please let me know.
Edit: I guess I'm just asking if there are any other government help for their family in regards to money for his medical issues. I'm pretty unfamiliar with all of that.
