I'll soon be 65, and so many more discounts and freebies will open up to me. I'm excited, because my income is $1200 a month, so things are extremely tight.
For example, I don't own a car and monthly bus tickets are half-price at 65, down from $35.00 a month to $17.50. That's the price of 5 day passes, which is pretty much all I can afford now. I've had to limit my bus riding and walk a lot because I couldn't afford to ride it much, so now I can ride it all the time. I'll be able to go more places to save money too, all of which are beyond my walking distance. I'll also be able to take advantage of free concerts and such that I didn't have the money for bus fare for previously.
Lots of places around town have senior days and senior discounts, and I've made a quite long list. Some start at age 60, but the better ones start at 65. When you live on so little, that 10-20% off here and there really helps. A gym near me gives away free memberships to those over 65, and they also allow 3 free classes a month.
I figure I'm going to save about $100 a month just on senior discounts. That doesn't sound like much to most people, but it's 1/12th of my income. With what I save, I'll be able to save up enough to get a plane ticket to see my son once a year. He lives clear across the country, so air fare & lodging is expensive.
