Hey PF!
I have made a couple posts here in the past, but this is by far the most exciting for me.
I was just offered a position on the big island at one of the resorts, and I am very excited. The offer is being drawn up by HR and I should receive it in a day or two.
Pay is ~46k and is not really negotiable as it is an MIT (management training program) in Finance (woot!). Technically pay is hourly, but comes out to 45k at least. it's 45 hours per week minimum, and more if I want it. Yes OT.
Benefits are a little unknown as I do not have the offer in hand yet, but I expect it to be pretty standard stuff for the position.
I am hoping to receive a sizable relocation package, and I know there is a standard one for the company, but I am hoping the one for HI is a bit larger considering the cost of living, and how much more expensive it is to move there. I also have my girlfriend (serious enough to be talking about marriage) that I am trying to move out with me. I also have a question for her but I'll ask near the end.
I am taking this job. It is a fantastic offer for my field (Hospitality) and unless there is something other than CoL, or moving costs, please do not try to change my mind.
With that said, what are some things that I have to consider? I have researched a lot about HI, and know a lot of the downsides like Island Fever. However, I would love to hear some more, less obvious, advice, focusing more on the finance/money side and the job side.
Also, I am going with or without my girlfriend (/relationships aside). We have discussed this and this is what we decided. Of course I want to bring her and start a life with her now (rather than in a year or two once I get relocated for promotion), so that brings me to her terms of moving with me. These terms are basically these two; Being able to afford it (for her, she won't let me pay for everything), and having a job in her field. Her major is Environmental Sustainability, and you would think it is easy to find stuff on the big island for that. HI seems like a city/state that is very communal/needs connections. The few jobs she has been able to apply for so far haven't been enough for her to feel comfortable yet. Any tips on finding more through some obscure means?
Thanks a bunch PF!
TLDR
Got job offer in Hawaii, HI for 45k for one year, then promotion (not in writing, but a natural progression in my field). Need advice for affording moving to HI, finding job for GF, and any general thought.
Edit: Something fun I just found out. HI has no major banks. No chase, wf, boa. Might make banking a little interesting for a while.
I'll update more if people are curious.
