I am a 31F living in an expensive city, 1.5 years out of a PhD program, married, and making 55K/year. My husband makes 80k but he works a ton [like it interferes with his sleep] so he might have to take a lower stress job for less money soon. I have 85k of student loan debt, no assets, barely anything in retirement so far [although we are both making regular contributions of 8-10% now] and a 3 month emergency fund.

I know it's a bit crazy to post a question about kids and pregnancy - but I've always been on the fence about having kids and as the biological window is closing in the next few years from me I'm thinking more and more about the financial implications of kids and how impossible THAT sounds.

At the same time, I really don't want to be making my final decision about having or not having kids in the next couple of years based on my student loan debt and rent expenses.

Do you all have any insights on how you balanced your financial debts and savings with having kids? Is it not as hard as I'm fearing it is?
