I've used TaxAct.com's free version--$0 for federal previously, and I had done state myself on the state's website--for the past 5 or so years and I rather liked it.

However, for Tax Year 2016, we're both considered self-employed, and their free version doesn't provide the necessary schedules for self employed filers. That appears to be their "Premium" version, which is $37 + $33 for state = $60.

I guess I could just stop at $37 for federal, if state with self employment is easy enough, but I have no idea how much harder state would be. If state's a big hassle for self-employed, I might just have the do it for another $33. I have no local where I live, so that's helpful.

But part of me really doesn't "believe in" paying money just to pay your share to society, and I've never done that before (>25yrs) and would love to keep that streak going.

So, Aside from plain old filing on paper (which I'd really like to avoid--software does feel much saner), any good free options specifically for self-employed filers?

(Other facts for my return: Married, filing together; no kids; not properties/cap. gains/losses; no business expenses...will open a 2016 IRA...otherwise, basically fairly simple other than self-employed).
