The way I tend to operate is that when I need a tool for a specific job I'll get the cheapest nastiest bit of kit that'll get the job done.
Most of the time I'll only use it a handful of times anyway so it'll last a lifetime even though it's shit.
On the occasions I use the thing regularly enough to break it / wear it out then I'll feel vindicated in splashing out to get the most robust longest lasting version of that tool/thing.
I find that that way I'm not needlessly buying top-spec kit that will be underused, and when I do buy something that'll see a lot of use I'll feel like the spend is justified.
