I have never been a person super invested in anything (school, hobbies, interests) as I am not a person who likes commitment to one particular thing. When I see some of my professors or people working in certain industries, it is almost like they live and breathe what they do. Many of them even admit this. That's all fine and dandy, but not for someone who doesn't have one particular interest and doesn't like to commit to one thing.

I consider myself fairly minimalistic. I am not one who craves to have luxury goods, a fancy house, an expensive car, a huge family, or anything of that sort. My hobbies and interests don't cost me much (rent books from the library, buy used records, surf the web). I have few friends, I am not apart of a large family, and am quite introverted.

Even though I enjoy living a simple life, even the most basic things to human survival cost money and I do not want to struggle financially. But at the same time, I don't want a career that will consume my life. Being in college, it doesn't really matter what program you are in or path you are headed on, college consumes a significant portion of your life. Which is fine for now as I know there is really no way of getting around that.

I want something that will provide me with a variety of jobs to choose from once I kind of figure out what I exactly want to do. But I also want something more technical, lucrative to the real world, and in demand as I don't want to earn a degree that opens little doors and leaves me jobless.

I narrowed it down to the "useful, valuable" degrees and then narrowed it down further to business and civil engineering (based on my interests). I considered IT as it's a booming field, but I don't really have an edge or interest in computers. I am leaning towards civil, but am also considering majoring in business with an emphasis in accounting, finance, or HR.

My only fear of course is having a job that will consume my life as I don't like being tied down to anything. I've considered the trades as well, but I kind of would prefer a job that's not too physically demanding or requires too much work with my heads. I like civil engineering because you get the opportunity to go outside and also communicate with people, but can work in the office as well.

I just know things are getting competitive and master degrees and advanced education is becoming an asset. This is becoming stressful for me to think about as I just think about having a simple life where I can finish school in 4-5 years and get a decent, stable, and not demanding or stressful job while also being able to have time during the day to do what makes me happy.
