About two months ago a friend of mine left to backpack through Asia for a year. She had been babysitting for a family and passed my contact on to them when she left, and I've been babysitting their son a few nights a week since January.
My friend had mentioned that she was getting paid $25 an hour, but since I started they've been giving me $20 an hour. I love the boy I babysit, and I feel really welcomed and cared for by his mom and dad. I'm also aware that I'm doing a good job with the work in their eyes. Is there an appropriate way to broach the subject that my friend had been being paid more, or to ask for a raise? For context, the family is very wealthy.
Since this is babysitting and not an office job, I'm not sure whether there's less leverage for having a discussion like this. My plan has been to ask about the possibility of a raise after six months if I'm still babysitting for them at that point, but I wanted to get feedback to see if I could have that conversation any earlier, maybe from somebody who's been in a similar position. Thanks.
