My neighbor is selling two used cars:
-
1995 Mazda MPV with 118k miles, automatic, 17 MPG, in good condition, KBB value of $1,700, he's asking $1,000. The back seats have been taken out to make more cargo space. He also has a roof cargo rack for it.
-
1995 Geo Prizm with 232k miles, automatic, 25 MPG, in fair condition, KBB value of $1,000, he's asking $500.
The seller is an honest guy. Both of the cars are running good and don't have any mechanical issues. He has even used them for cross country road trips. Prizm is a gas saver but the mileage is too high and the car has a big dent on the passenger side back door and some rust on the hood. Mazda has low mileage and is a minivan which can be used for moving or camping.
I'm a single college student and I'm commuting by public transport and use Uber/Lyft from time to time. I wanna get a cheap car for shopping and getting around on weekends for just a few months before I graduate and start working; then I'm gonna sell the car and get a better one, especially if I'm gonna use it for commuting.
Are any of these cars a frugal choice? Which one would you recommend? Will the insurance, tax, and maintenance cost the same for both of them?
Thank you
