Hello, I'm not... freaking out, but I'm definitely concerned and I'm unsure on how to go about this. I'm 23, technically broke as fuck but still making a bit of money.
Throughout 2016, I worked year-round as a (contract) Graphic Designer for a company, meaning I would occasionally work from home, but mostly work at the company shop. This was my primary work, and I was paid with 1099-MISC form (I was offered employment with a W2, but I declined at the time).
I also worked with another company part time, this time as an actual employee with a W2 form and everything.
At the end of year here's how much I made:
1099-MISC - $17,500, W2 - $9,500
After adding... some of the deductions I was more sure I could deduct through TurboTax, it's saying that I owe $4,231 down to $3,200 (with the deductions).
So now my questions:
I'm currently in the middle of filing my taxes through TurboTax. I am unsure of exactly how much and what i'm able to claim. Would going through a dedicated service like H&R Block or something else be worth it?
I'm not necessarily against paying taxes, but I'm already struggling financially trying to rush through paying off student loans ($14k left!), and I've been occasionally having to help my mom/grandma with medical bills. The idea that I now owe $3,200 makes me want to pull my hair out. I've been living frugal as fuck too.
I'm considering talking to the my 'boss' or rather, the person who I do graphic design for to maybe become an actual employee, would this be beneficial money-wise for both of us?
Thanks to anyone who takes their time to read this, it's currently 3 am... I decided to finish my taxes around 11pm and it's only dragged me into this crazy loop of worry and now I can't sleep.
