I originally posted this on LPT but I was told that it would fit in better here. I've worked with a lot of people who have paid some website $1 to get their credit scores and credit reports only to find out that they get rebilled for $35 a week later. That $35 never gets refunded to them.
You can do it yourself for free:
AnnualCreditReport.com gives you all three of your credit reports for free, but you only get them once a year. These are the complete reports which show hard and soft inquiries.
CreditKarma.com gives you your Equifax and Transunion credit scores and credit reports. The scores are your Vantage score, which is usually pretty close to your FICO 8 score.
Discover Credit Scorecard gives you your Experian FICO score and report. You don't need to be a Discover card holder.
That should give you a pretty good idea where you are credit-wise but some lenders and especially landlords/insurance companies look at your Lexis Nexis report:
Lexis Nexis Disclosure is what you need to fill out to see what they have on you. This usually includes any car accidents, evictions, late rental payments, previous addresses, old landlords, property records, criminal records, court documents, and about 30 other things. It's really an all encompassing background file that is usually what gets pulled when you try to rent an apartment, buy insurance, get an employment check, etc.
