I've been there before. I am American but have family there. In general, India seems to have a lot of well-made things you can get VERY inexpensively, depending on where you go.
For example: stainless steel tiffin lunchboxes. We have our MIL's sets, which had lasted for 2 decades and still look new. The sets are like... $2 each. I've seen tiffin boxed rebranded in the US selling for upwards of $20 (e.g., Planet Box, eco boxes).
Upholstery-like woven cotton bedspreads, twin size. Beautiful patterns. We use them as slipcovers for our couches. They are like... $5 each. I think they would cost far more here, like $50 at a "world trading" home goods store.
Custom tailored shirts and pants. You buy the material, tailor stitches it. Both my husband and I have several outfits that were custom stitched at a low cost by the neighborhood tailor.
I don't care about cost when it comes to BIFL items but I thought I would just mention the prices we paid as a point of interest. There are lots of expensive things in India, too, like furniture, jewelry, artwork, brand name things, etc.
Anything else that might be worth buying abroad, especially in India/Southeast Asia?
