Five months ago I moved to Oregon from out of state with a partner that somehow convinced me we would get married and live happily ever after. Last night he dumped me. Sob.
The plan was that I would get my degree here, and in two years I would be set to enter the workforce. I was unemployed until three weeks ago, working a part-time, minimum wage work-study job on campus.
So here's the deal: I need to stay in school and complete this degree or else I am looking at intermittent homelessness and dead-end jobs for the rest of my life. I have $6 in my bank account, $16K in student loans, and a little over $2K coming to me at the end of the month in tax returns.
I can sleep in my car, shower on campus, and apply for SNAP through my school. These are all short term solutions that I am prepared work with.
What I need help figuring out is how can I afford to stay in school as a homeless person netting (hopefully) around $800 a month from a work study job. I am entering into an income-based repayment plan with my loan servicers once I get my first paycheck on the 24th.
I know the next few years are not going to be comfortable, so anything you can offer up that will help me navigate homelessness and heartbreak in really cold weather would be greatly appreciated.
I'm sorry if this is really stupid to ask. My whole life just got turned upside down.
We just adopted a cat. I'm destroyed.
