I had a brick until September, when I realised I was being ripped off. I changed providers to get a much better deal on contract, but the new provider (three) only works on 3g phones. So I took my mum's old galaxy ace 3 and used it mainly for calling, and the occasional email checking.
I'm not really a huge fan of smartphones in general. The internet and apps is cool, but touchscreens and low battery life irritate me. I was planning to switch back to my Nokia on pay as you go or a non-three cheap contract in 7/8 months once this contract expires.
Old smartphone has now died, and I face a dilemma. Either I get myself a fairly cheap, but decent, smartphone (was thinking ebay for old flagship or last year's midrange- for sustainability reasons) which will then be "my phone" until it's too old to do anything and I'll get another phone. Or I beg my dad for his old phone (iPhone 4) to use until the contract runs out, and then go back to my brick as planned.
The advantages of a brick are that I can actually have it always with me and on due to the small size and low distraction potential. It is also handy in that it has a calculator and a really loud alarms even when the phone itself is turned off! How cool is that!
Advantage of smartphone is that I have internet wherever I go (for my purposes, the data is practically unlimited) which is pretty cool, but what I've found is that I very often don't have it on me because I don't want to bre distracted (or its off to save battery)
