I recently graduated with my BBA in Management at a small HBCU in Alabama. Fortunately, I finished with a 3.54 gpa, served 3 corporate internships with very large companies (one of them being a top 5 government contractor), and held several two sales related jobs throughout my college career. A couple days ago I was given an offer to work with a different top 5 government contractor salaried at $53,000, 17 days PTO, health care benefits, and 10 paid holidays off. I haven't officially received the offer letter because the HR manager wasn't in her office that day, but when I was speaking to the company rep I had been in contact with I asked her if the offer was negotiable. She said yes they would be open to it, but because government contracts are only given so much funding there may not be much wiggle room. I told her I would send my counter after reviewing the letter, since there was a lot of information to take in over the phone.
I have read the articles and reddit threads discussing this and there seem to be a couple different opinions on this:
- You should try to negotiate whenever you get a job offer
- You shouldn't try to negotiate on your first job because it could seem too pushy and you don't have any real experience
I'm not really sure what I should do in this case. The only reason I mentioned my accomplishments earlier is because I don't know if they are good enough to base my negotiation. I had two other job offers from my internships as well, but I really wanted to work for this company the most. I was going to counter with the usual 10% salary increase, but $58,000 sounded a bit pushy to me. What should I do?
