I greatly prefer long parkas over umbrellas. I used to live in the north, where I had a broad selection of jackets that were designed for skiiers that were great generalists -- waterproof, warm to a point, and breathable. You could zip additional layers into them.
I live in the south now, and up until this year, I have still used a North Face parka for most of my raincoat needs. It's a bit heavy for the job, especially when the temperature is above 70 (which is like 10 months out of the year...) but it mostly does the job of keeping me dry. Unfortunately, it's about 20 years old now, and the seams, zippers, and stitching have started to break down. It leaks wind heavily in the winter and rain the rest of the year. I'm pretty sure having it repaired would require replacing, well, the entire jacket, as the goretex isn't quite breathable anymore. It was pretty close to BIFL, though.
So that's just it. I'm looking for a super light weight breathable men's summer weight wind blocking rain parka. Requirements are thigh length and a great hood. I'd prefer something with heavier zippers as many of the things I've looked at from Eddie Bauer and North Face had lightweight zippers that I have a bad past with. Recommendations?
