Hi guys, so I'm moving from Canada to the US (Ann Arbor) for school (J-1/DS-2019), and I'm pretty overwhelmed at the moment since it's my first time making a drastic move.
I have a few questions regarding credit/rent/etc that I'd greatly appreciate some answers on. As additional information, I'm 21, a Canadian citizen, and have "excellent" credit here (but I'm pretty sure that can't be transferred to the US).
Here are my questions:

What document(s) do I need for rent? I'll be going over in two weeks to secure an apartment, do I need to bring any statements, credit history, etc? I'll be moving in the end of June but securing a place now.

Do I need a SSN? I won't be working, only going to school for four years. I've heard that you can't get an SSN if you're not working.

As soon as I arrive, can I open a bank account? Meaning, lets say I secure an apartment in two weeks, can I open a bank account or should I wait until I officially move in?

Would you suggest that a family member adds me as an authorized user on one of their credit cards in order to build credit until June?

How will taxes in the US work if I'm not working? Do I need to file every year?
