Hi guys, so I'm moving from Canada to the US (Ann Arbor) for school (J-1/DS-2019), and I'm pretty overwhelmed at the moment since it's my first time making a drastic move.

I have a few questions regarding credit/rent/etc that I'd greatly appreciate some answers on. As additional information, I'm 21, a Canadian citizen, and have "excellent" credit here (but I'm pretty sure that can't be transferred to the US).

Here are my questions:

  • What document(s) do I need for rent? I'll be going over in two weeks to secure an apartment, do I need to bring any statements, credit history, etc? I'll be moving in the end of June but securing a place now.

  • Do I need a SSN? I won't be working, only going to school for four years. I've heard that you can't get an SSN if you're not working.

  • As soon as I arrive, can I open a bank account? Meaning, lets say I secure an apartment in two weeks, can I open a bank account or should I wait until I officially move in?

  • Would you suggest that a family member adds me as an authorized user on one of their credit cards in order to build credit until June?

  • How will taxes in the US work if I'm not working? Do I need to file every year?

Would appreciate any other suggestions, thank you.
