For about 2 months, my washer had been a bit off balance, shakey, and loud. This didn't happen to me often, but happened to my 2 roommates who are quite frankly, bad at living without their mothers. I assumed this was due to overloading the machine or placing things all on one side.
I purchased the washer and dryer combo off craigslist for about 200 over 4 years ago and have made repairs on both of them.
A week ago, the washer starter screeching loudly during the spin cycle. After some research, I found this was due to a bad bearing and clutch assembly. This would have cost about 200 for parts. The labor would have been difficult, but doable.
I decided to look for alternatives. After a few days of craigslist searches, avoiding scams, I went to letgo and found a military guy with a commercial speedqueen with a coin drop for 60 bucks. I gave him 70, delivered. This was a contractor getting rid of dryers left over from a hotel renovation. Other people have bailed out because of the coin thing, but you just use the same quarters over and over.
Now I have something that will probably last me many years for dirt cheap. The washer washes better than my previous one.
I want to upgrade eventually, but I have a million projects ahead of this one.
TLDR; Look a bit, and you will find a deal for your present need. I bought a commercial washer for 70 bucks, instead eating my emergency budget by buying something new.
