Backstory: I'm a 24 year old guy making 42k pretax a year. I’m a recent college graduate and have my first steady job. I have a full year's salary saved up and no debts. I live frugally and have a budget set up that I religiously stick to. I’ve now reached the point where I feel comfortable thinking about starting up an IRA or 401k but haven’t pulled the trigger.
For the last few months, my dad has been encouraging me to meet with his long time Northwestern Mutual “finance guy”. My dad has a successful career working a well paying corporate job and has paid for my college tuition and helped support me until I landed my first job. He says he owes a lot of his financial situation to working with his guy.
For the past 2 weeks, my dad’s Northwestern Mutual guy and his has called me 4 or 5 times asking to set up a meeting because my pop encouraged him to reach out to me. I’ve yet to meet with him. Now, I understand that my dad is try to look out for me and has my best interest at heart, however, everything I’ve read about NWM seems sketchy. As a 24 year old healthy dude, I’m not so sure I need to be throwing down a ton of cash on life insurance policies.
Can anyone lend me some advice?
tl;dr - 24y/o Male, Money to invest, no debt. Dad wants me to invest with his “finance guy" at Northwestern Mutual. Not sure if this is a smart financial move.
