His credit score is excellent ( >750) and his income is app 60,000 USD. He has a secure job and will have potentially more income in a few years once he finishes his training.
My credit score is fair (somewhere between 670-680 depending on which credit union you ask) and I make six figures (200,000+). I have a secure and stable job.
My credit score was much better (>720) until six months ago when I missed a payment on two credit cards that I barely use and forgot I used one month. I didn't realize the payment was due until it was too late to not get reported. Obviously I am kicking myself for this.
I can't believe this dumb mistake got my score so much lower. Everything else for me is on time for years. I have a large amount of student loans that I pay on time and a number of credit cards that I don't use. I have no credit card debt at all (utilization is 9% according to credit karma) and the only credit card I use currently is one in which I am an authorized user (my husband is the account holder) - the balance is paid in full every month.
Of course my husband who is more diligent about these things than I is absolutely furious (we both thought my score was better until I logged into credit karma and checked today). We were hoping to buy a home in a tough, very expensive market this year and now he's wondering if we should even bother, because he thinks we won't get the best rate, and we will have to borrow a lot, so a higher interest rate will be a big deal.
Just wondering if there is any hope for this year, and if there is anything I can do immediately to improve my score even a little.
