I'm great with saving money with groceries and general purchases (partially thanks to tips I read on this sub) but this is one area that I'm not well versed in. For my household, I need cable (and DVR), one home phone line and good Internet for business purposes but I'm sick of paying Verizon $185 a month for subpar service. I have upgraded Internet but the broadcast isn't strong enough to cover my whole house and it's slow, so I mostly rely on my 4G cell service. I don't think that cord cutting is an option as it's too tedious to try to find the content that my family wants for free, and adding up the standalone subscriptions that do carry the content we're looking for results in a significant cost. I've given projectfreetv a try but the ads are too invasive and the links aren't always reliable. Dish is not an option as I have too many trees surrounding my house.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to reduce these costs? Has anyone had success saving money by replacing their phone line with VoIP (like Vonage), or replacing their DVR with TiVo? Or do you have any tips in general to cut these ridiculous telecom costs?

I'm so desperate, I'm considering switching to Comcast for a cheaper promotional rate...
