I was working in northern California but my employer was based out of Montana. I was being paid allowances for flights home every week, use of my own phone and vehicle, etc. I was being taxed 15 percent overall. My residence was always in California so I did not have to move but the company paid me these allowances because technically we were on per diem. I am not working for a different company and I am being taxed 30 percent. What is the reason behind this? Was there an error on my deductions on my checks? Or was I being taxed Montana state tax? It seems strange to be making about half of what I was making and being taxed almost double.
