Hi all,
So I need some help on my taxes. I just graduated college in May with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and started working in June making 70k a year.
I made about 45k from working this year, but I also have a w2 from my student loans and financial aid.
While I was in college, I worked internships, but my parents helped me pay rents and a small amount of tuition that wasn't covered from my loans and aid. They always filed my taxes jointly with them.
My mom says that because I still was dependent on them for the first 6 months, that I should file taxes as a dependant of them one more year. But I made 45k and have been living on my own 100% financially independent since June.
I'm not sure the positives or negatives, or legally what I am supposed to do to file my taxes this year. Next year will be easy, since I will be working full time on my own.
Thanks for all the help, sorry if I broke any rules, I don't normally post too often.
