Throwaway for obvious reasons. So I've been living in my current house for about a year and a half. I sublet from friends and the landlord has no idea that I'm there. I pay one of my roommates the rent in cash every month and have been doing so ever since I moved in. Last month, my roommate realised that I have only been paying $X, when in reality my rent should've been $50 more. This was apparently discussed and decided during a house meeting which I was not at, which nobody ever told me was even happening - nobody can seem to find an exact date/time it happened and over the last year and nobody ever mentioned my rent being more expensive to me. When my roommate realised he had been paying more, he let me know and apologised. Since then, I have paid $X + $50, as asked. But now my roommate is trying to get me to pay the back payment, of all of these $50s that I missed the last year. In my opinion, if my roommate didn't ever let me know, he can't possibly expect me to pay the backpayment now. Plus, if there's no record of this house meeting ever happening, how am I supposed to know this conversation even ever happened? I feel like it's my roommate's mistake so it's his problem. If I wasn't friends with my roommates and I was just living in a normal landlord with a normal house, and if after a year my landlord said, 'Oh yeah I forgot to tell you, your rent actually went up by $50 a year ago, I'm gonna need all that money now', there's no way that anyone would pay it. Am I in the right here? My roommate doesn't seem to think so but I really don't think I should have to pay this money. Please help!
