My tax situation was relatively simple last year. Just had a few of the basic forms and needed to file a 1040A. Could have done it myself, but I thought TurboTax 1040A is free, why not? Well, I get to the end of the software and TurboTax tells me my tax situation "requires" the 1040 long form and I "need" to upgrade to the Deluxe edition for $34.99, complete with a link to the upgrade page.

I know the tax code well enough to say that's not right. So I call TurboTax Support, the agent looks over my documents and tells me "No, you don't need the 1040, the software is simply 'recommending' Deluxe to you. If you skip the page, TurboTax will let you file with the Free Edition. If you truly need Deluxe, it won't let you file."

Don't let them fool you.
