Quick recap: from my last thread, I decided to give the Jansport Recruit backpack a try. TBH, it was perfect except for one thing - the laptop compartment was too tight for my laptop. I can fit the laptop in, but removing it feels like a herculean task. Also, due to my laptop's thickness and the small opening for the compartment, the zipper can potentially scratch the laptop when I remove it from the bag. Due to those reasons, I had no choice but to return it.

That being said, now that I've tried it out and done some more research, I believe I'm more aware of what to look for in a backpack:

  • padded compartment for laptop that will fit a 15" laptop WITH a thickness of ~1" (had to look into backpack that will fit 17" laptop since every goddamn backpack seems to be designed with only MBP in mind)

  • roomy (34L+ capacity)

  • sort of weather-proof - doesn't need to be able to handle a downpour, but it shouldn't get soaked from a moderate rain

  • can double as a vacation backpack (ie. pack enough stuff for one week at most).

Again, I'm open for additional inputs, but so far these backpacks "seem" to meet my requirements:

Everki Beacon/Titan - the inner pouch thing seems to be taking up space. Neither of them look that roomy despite having 34L+ capacity. Shoulder straps look not so fluffy - will my back hurt if I have to actually haul a lot of stuff someday?

High Sierra Access - pretty much what I'm looking for, except quality seems to be lacking lately.

MW Vandal/Rambler - why won't they include a padded laptop compartment? I was so ready to hand them my money after seeing their design+capacity, but I don't want to have to deal with a separate sleeve.

Tom Bihn's Brain Bag - same problem as MW: gotta get a sleeve for laptop

Thank you again everyone.
