My fiance and I have very simple plans for our future together. Work jobs we both enjoy, live simply in a beautiful cabin close to the mountains, save tremendously for travel and retirement. She wants to work with animals as a veterinarian technician and I wish to provide good service to others as a diesel mechanic.

We want to purchase a decent plot of land with cool climate and have a comfortable small cabin home (500-700 sqft) and accumulate great savings for our future. We wish make all full cash payments for this and be free of mortgage and debt if possible.

We currently live in southern California and we have done research and found promising affordable plots of land up north in Redding, Montague, and Alturas that would bring us in close proximity to our potential jobs -- quite a number of animal hospitals and diesel shops up there.

Only thing is, we are not entirely sure of exactly how the housing could work. We have ideas. We have thoughts of building it from scratch, we have contemplated a tiny house (but now deciding against because of overwhelming legalities), and now we're pondering maybe buying a cheap cabin altogether with land for <20k if that's even possible with our planned locations.

It's not necessarily that we want to override the system and laws and defeat status quo. We simply want the most frugal, simplest, and most cost efficient path that could allow us to save big.

Thoughts? Any ideas as to what would be the best fitting way of housing for us would be greatly appreciated.
