Yesterday on my 44th birthday I went to the ER for severe abdominal pain. Normally a staff member wheels a computer by the patient's bed and collects all the insurance data. This didn't happen as the ER was overloaded and I was in a bed in a hallway. They did a cat scan, took a urine test, loaded me up with pain killers and sent me to the discharge office. The lady at the discharge office pushed the last page of a seven page contract across the desk and said "sign this." I read it and asked for the previous pages. She looked flustered and said "nobody asks to read the contract". So she hands me all seven pages. I start reading and it's horrific. They can charge me whatever they dream up and will go after me aggressively for the charges. I told her "I'm not signing that". Wife got uncomfortable "Just sign it". "No, thank you." I politely said. The lady didn't know what to do. She said "ok" and that was that. Wife got upset on the way home. "Nothing bad ever happens when you sign those things." Really? So now I'm not sure what happens next. Do they come after me for charges? I gave them my (very good) insurance information. I'm well covered. Anyone know how this might play out?
