I am looking for a way to answer to the critics on this sub about the too expensive suggestions. I agree with users who say that this sub as become a luxury one. BIFL is for most people a way to save time and money, not one to waste all your spended time and money on always more expensive items.
That's why I am on the project to elaborate a list of items that may be easily found in thrift stores or used. On my side, I found most of the things I own in these; and some are BIFL-valuable as hell. I think I can make the statement by experience that anything - absolutely anything - can be found in thrift stores, so are BIFL items.
Here is my project:
-
Elaborate a method on shopping used BIFL. Giving advices on how to put your hand on what you need.
-
Make a list of things by categories (cloth, cooking, sport equipement, etc). For each categories, giving clues of what may or not be BIFL. Give a general appreciation of durability of materials you may find in these, of things to keep in mind when you evaluate a used product, of precaution you have to take before buying, etc.
-
Make a list of brands that may be found in thrift stores and are BIFL. Evaluate their rarity to give a general idea of the chances to find these brands used.
- Others suggestions of potential needs are welcomed.
So first, I want to get the general opinion of everyone on this. I won’t put time on this if no one really thinks it is a good idea.
Second, as my project is quite big and that it is only based on my experiences and my personal preferences, I would like some people to show their interest for contributing to it. It can be as simple as reading it and giving an opinion about clarity. If others are more generous, you can elaborate an whole section or even take the projects on yourself.
I think this project may change positively the philosophy of this sub, which sometime transforms people needing good items into money bitches for a few brands. I don’t complain about the precious help and advices you give to some of us; I just want to open the way for a cheap BIFL alternative.
