In the interest of reducing the amount of wasteful products I use, and minimizing the chemical content in my graywater, I've set my sights on finding a better deoderant. I've yet to come across something promising that didn't cost my firstborn child. So I did a little digging, and I'm thinking about making my own.

There are a few common chemical themes in natural deoderants, all of which work to prevent bacteria on the skin from producing smells. Some attack what those critters feed on, some attack the critters themselves, and some are perfume by another name.

Of the things I've looked at, here's my thought: potassium alum in a mixture of water and alcohol. Alcohol will kill the initial colonies of bacteria and pucker the pores somewhat, and the layer of potassium alum salts left behind discourages further growth. The alcohol base also means it would evaporate quickly.

I could get my hands on the raw ingredients in bulk for an excellent price-per-unit compared to what I've seen online and in stores. I just have to figure out the ratios.

Am I crazy, or could this actually work?
