I'm a 24 year old Civil Engineer by trade working as a Production Supervisor for a mining company near Hershey, PA.

I took this position last February and have absolutely loved living this close to the east coast where there's a million things to do for fun what with all of the events and cities so close!

Recently however my company has decided to shut down the plant I work at and eliminate my position, leaving me with two options:

1) Move back home to my tiny rural hometown in the Upper Peninsula of MI (where there is very little social life for young people) for a transfer within the company for a promotion from $66k with a 7% annual bonus to $72k with a 10% annual bonus.

Or

2) Hang out at my current job (until they complete the shutdown process which is slated to finish on April 1, but could happen sooner) and try to find an entirely new company and new job within the area.

I have to let them know whether I accept the promotion offer by Thursday.

To make things even harder I have a great girlfriend of about 7 months who I met here who won't be able to come with me.

So I'm wondering if there is anyone out there who can give me any advice on what to do or to consider? Or maybe someone has been in a similar situation who can explain what they did?

My main concern with moving back home is that it'll strain the relationship with my GF and I'll be missing out on living life up to the fullest as a young person by the big city. My hometown has very, very few young people with extremely limited social life.

My main concerns with not taking the promotion are that I'll miss out on a huge career advancement opportunity that won't come around again soon, and that I won't find as good of a job (if any job) with a new company in my current area.

TL:DR I'm losing my job to downsizing, I must decide whether to move back to my tiny rural hometown in MI with no social life for a job promotion with a 10% raise, or to stay in the larger city area near Hershey, PA where my GF is and find an entirely new job and new company (with the risk of a pay cut) before I'm laid off
