Hi PF,

My wife's parents are currently paying a $90k loan. She has a Psychology undergrad degree. Yes, this amount is insane. I was not in the picture when she began her studies and I am not the one that took the ridiculous amount.

Several months ago they had asked her to take some of it on herself (half). I was highly against the idea as she is not a high earner (her parents are both high earners) and figured, eventually, it'll just fall to me. I'm very sorry but I would never take such a bad loan and why in the world would I take their burden for making such a big mistake? My wife argued that she would pay it. We are now expecting a child and she has zero income - meaning it falls to me to pay half of her parents loan.

They have now told her that they expect her to take the rest of the loan as well. I was against taking the first half to begin with, now they are "informing" her that they expect her to take the rest? I am pretty much done being civilized.

My main question is - can they legally screw us over this? Can they just "give" us the loan? The first half was done willingly on my wife's part.

There is some more backstory but I'm not sure it's relevant.

Thanks PF and sorry for the incensed post, it's very frightening. I work extremely hard to provide for my wife and to save for our future so we don't make the financial mistakes that both sets of parents had made. And this feels like being taken extreme advantage of.
