It has been a couple of years since somebody asked about this on r/frugal, so I figured I'd ask and see whether there are any new recommendations.
I am looking into buying an action camera. I am not a hardcore outdoor/extreme sports person, but I'd like something I can take kayaking or on vacation with me. I also want something that can do time lapse. The GoPro Hero 5 (and its predecessors) are a little out of my desired price range currently (given that I won't use it super often I don't quite want to spend $400), so I have looked into various other brands of action cameras as well as the countless GoPro knockoffs (such as various SJCAM, Lightdow, APEMAN, AKASO, Yi, Activeon... so many different models) and I still don't know what I want.
Does anybody here have a good recommendation for me? Has anybody had luck with a $40 GoPro knockoff? Should I look into alternative name brands (like the Polaroid Cube) instead?
