Greetings /r/DIY!If you're seeing this page, you've probably noticed that the subreddit looks different. Hopefully you like the change. Earlier in the month we put up this thread going over what the new year would bring for /r/DIY, including a stylesheet update. As you can see - that stylesheet is now live. The new style adds some more functionality for both the users and moderators as well as making it just a little bit easier on the eyes for everyone. Below I will go over some of the new updates and what they bring to the subreddit. Announcement Bar The Reddit website only allows us to use two stickied threads at one time. But what happens when we have important information we need to get out to the subreddit and we've already used those two stickies? Well...that usually gets sent to the sidebar. Which means most people miss it. Mobile users almost never see the sidebar, and a lot of desktop readers don't routinely check it.This brings us to our new "Announcement Bar" - with the new bar above the posts, we can add additional information about what's going on. Whether its a contest or an upcoming AMA, it's one more piece of functionality to keep everyone informed. Unfortunately, mobile users still won't be able to see that :[ But, it is a little easier to see for those on the desktop. Sidebar Redesign Speaking of the sidebar, a huge part of the new style was making sure the sidebar was easier to read and splitting it up so that the most important information was clearly visible. We wanted to be sure people could find the subreddit rules clearly, AMA information, etc. The new sidebar offers that and we're really pleased with it. Flair System We're flairing everything! When you make a post now - AutoModerator will go ahead and assign it a flair based on a set of ever evolving keywords we've attached to it. Please note that this is not a perfect system and for the first few months it may have a lot of mistakes, so if you notice that your post is flaired incorrectly - please set the flair to what you believe it should be yourself. We will be constantly updating the keyword list to make it as accurate as possible. We're also retroactively flairing all post going back about 12 months. Filter Flairs What good would it be to have all those flairs if we didn't make it easy to filter them? The new sidebar has a filter section. Looking for woodworking only posts? Just click that filter and you'll only see posts flaired with "woodworking". Thumbnails We've turned thumbnails on and think they look great. Of course, you might not like them. If you don't want thumbnails on your /r/DIY, simply head over to your preferences and disable them entirely. Possible Bugs This is a new stylesheet and we've already fixed a couple minor bugs. If you notice any bugs or weird visual effects - please let us know in the comments below. Tell us what browser you use and what operating system. If you can provide a screenshot, that would be great too! Massive Thanks A massive thank you goes out to /u/qtx who built this entire stylesheet for /r/DIY. The subreddit has been in desperate need of a facelift for a while, and he came in and gave us one that looks great. We can't thank him enough.Another massive thank you goes out to /u/thirdegree who built the bot which did the retroactive flairing for us. This bot is responsible for flairing all of our posts. Without his help, the old posts would not have been flaired. We hope you all like the new stylesheet. Please leave your comments below and let us know if you find any bugs!-/r/DIY Moderation via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2kMNMcJ
