I've been told to cross-post here. Main story is in this thread but I thought I'd share the relevant financial bits here.
My income is $850 from social security. My rent comes out to $550 per month. My minimum payment for hospital collections is $285 if I want to have it paid off by March 2018, at which point I would no longer be wholly dependent on my roommate. There's no fluff spending to cut since my roommate had been paying my way as long as I helped around the house. I've tried to have the medical debt reduced in the past to no avail, even going so far as to visit ripmedicaldebt.org after that one John Oliver episode.
Searching for jobs is not a viable suggestion -- I had been a client of my state's department of vocational rehabilitation's blind field services for three years, and all my counselor ever did was e-mail me links to job leads on craigslist that usually leads to Herbalife or Monavie (MLM scams) orientations. I am legally blind and literally no one wants to hire someone who has to press his face right up against the computer screen for a legitimate job, even though I have past experience in a call center and an assembly line factory. This is the primary reason why my roommate was willing to take my money in exchange for giving me a place to live -- she saw for herself the bad luck I had been having with securing employment and took pity on me. She even had me fill out a questionnaire from a "resumes to interview" website and paid to have a professional-looking resume made up for me, submitted applications on my behalf just to see if I was exaggerating, and we still received no reply. It's bad enough that from this point forward, I'm going to spend the rest of my free time earning a nickel for every group of receipts that I transcribe for ScoutIt on mturk.
Ideally I'd like to not take out any loans or apply for credit cards, but if straits become dire enough, I'd like to know of resources that will give me a reasonable amount of time to pay off the principal without too much interest. I only have $15 left in my account but will be buying a stamp for a normal letter along with sending a certified letter to my roommate's landlord before tomorrow, so a secured credit card would probably be out of my reach.
I'm not sure what help you guys could offer, but I'm following up on every suggestion that I've been given in an effort to establish some stability for the next few months, including the one that told me to cross-post here. And like I said in the other thread, I'm not fishing for handouts, just information. Thanks!
