My mother-in-law works for a law firm. Today she was called into HR and informed that there was a problem with her paycheck because the company had not been deducting her health insurance premiums for several months. They have given her 4 months to pay back nearly 7000 dollars they say she owes, because she was insured during that time and thus "receiving services without paying for them." Does she have any options, or is this a thing that can just happen?

In addition, do I need to vigilantly watch my pay stubs and make sure everything is deducted that's supposed to be? How would I even know if they didn't deduct something if it's not shown on the pay stub? I don't want to wake up one day and find out I owe thousands of dollars because someone else screwed up in a way that benefited me without my knowledge.
