i grew up and was supported mostly by my father, a single-parent public school teacher...needless to say, simple living was drilled into me (at least in part) since birth.

my boyfriend loaned me this book claiming that it changed his life, and while i was skeptical at first (thinking that my dad had taught me most of everything i was going to use to live simply), this book has completely blown me away. a complete transformation in my thought process as it relates to career, ownership of property/car, the importance of savings, and so much more.

what it did most for me, though, was explain the importance of acquiring the skills i need to sustain my life (cooking, sewing, working on cars, fixing computers, painting, etc) to allow me more independence.

american culture provides a heavy push for individuals to become highly skilled in just a few areas; while there are great benefits to this, i have always felt that this lifestyle places too much of my life and independence in the hands of the economy, trusting that what is currently valuable will remain so throughout my life so that i can continue to be employed. i have always valued having the knowledge and skills to complete tasks on my own, but this book has provided a more full understanding of that, as well as a quite a bit of motivation to keep learning and growing. just wanted to share!
